Botswana & the Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is located in Botswana and is listed as one of the Seven Wonders of Africa. It is a vast wetland and depending on season varies from a maze of waterways to scattered islands. There is nothingquite like sleeping in the bush in a tent during a sub-tropical thunderstorm in the delta.
The local currency here is USD so depending on current exchange rates Botswana can be very expensive. Most of the high end camps are in excess of $US500/day
The delta is accessed by direct flight from Johannesburg to Maun. From there local transfers are availableto the many camps locally and within the delta. Accommodation varies from basic camping and tented camps up to 5-star resorts.
The Delta is more relaxed destination than most in Southern Africa. Hotels and camps offer game drives and walks but on the whole this is a kick back and relax destination. Options include:
- Moremi Game Reserve – if you want to see varied species in large numbers Moremi is a great choice. Day tours or accommodation within the reserve are available.
- Okavango Delta Safaris – tours by mokoro (the local canoes, now unfortunately made of fibreglass), scenic flights, horse riding or walking safaris.
- Mokoro Rides through the Delta – a very relaxing half day tour gliding through the canals and waterways of the Delta.
